Some press
reports have suggested that the new law remains restrictive insofar areas of NGO activity
are concerned. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
NGOs cannot act as political
organizations.
Reason: Political
organizations came under the purview of the Law on Political Parties.
NGOs cannot act as unions.
Reason: Unions, likewise,
came under the purview of a separate law.
NGOs, by definition, are non-profit
organizations. Hence they cannot act as business organizations. However, they may realize
income from productive and service projects to ensure sustainability.
